Even better, if you overstay to try and get in an extra shot or two the Matriarch will simply turn around and jump into you, blowing you to literal smithereens. Even with a perfect active reloaded gun, the amount of damage you do it laughable. Turns out bringing that cryo gun was a good idea, except for the fact that it heavily limits your mobility and makes you an easy target for the Matriarch.ĭrop that sucker and head around to the back to get in some solid damage…and by “solid damage” I mean next to nothing. The mechanics of the fight are simple enough, freeze the boss and shoot it in the back. With the Matriarch awoken and out to kill Kait, you get to fight this berzerker-like foe with a hitbox the size of a house in an enclosed space. I could, but this boss fight is just so bad. I could have forgiven a lot with the story payoff we get in Act II as it finally wraps up a plotline that has been dangling since Gears of War 2 (2008).

No, one fight in particular breaks the biggest cardinal sin of any boss fight, it just isn’t fun and makes you watch an unskippable cutscene every time you fail. I’m not just talking about the fact that the fights themselves aren’t fun or engaging, or about how they’re time-consuming and tedious.
